The hardest country borders to draw from memory (and 9 more challenges)

Ten country border outlines that test your spatial memory, ordered by boundary complexity in the game's map data.

Difficult country borders and outlines ask you to remember several kinds of information at once: overall proportion, coastline direction, internal border changes, islands, gaps, and distinctive extensions. A common mistake is to begin with the smallest visible feature. That spends attention before the main silhouette exists. A better method is to draw a low-detail envelope, add one structural cut or peninsula, and stop when the outline is recognizable.

This ranking uses coordinate-vertex counts from the project's 110-metre Natural Earth-derived TopoJSON for the ten candidates below. It is a reproducible measure of complexity in this particular map file, not a universal measure of what every person finds hard. Large countries and archipelagos naturally gain more vertices, and a different map resolution could change the order. Use the numbers as a practice sequence, then judge the real difficulty by the errors you repeat.

    Separate the mainland from the islands

    Greece

    Greece is the least complex outline in this advanced set, but it is still difficult to reconstruct as one coherent picture. The mainland breaks into several peninsulas while islands scatter across the Aegean. Begin with the broad northern block and the long southern Peloponnese gesture. Add Crete as a separate horizontal stroke and place only two or three larger island groups. A simplified Greece reads more clearly than a cloud of guessed dots.

    Build one island from three large lobes

    United Kingdom

    The United Kingdom looks familiar until you have to place Scotland, Wales, and the English coast in proportion. Start with Great Britain as one tall shape: a broader northern mass, a western Welsh bulge, and a narrowing southeast. Ignore the Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland on the first pass. Northern Ireland can be a short separate stroke. The goal is to preserve the island's tilt and changing width before attempting coastal detail.

    Keep four islands on one diagonal

    Japan

    Japan is not hard because each main island is individually complicated. It is hard because the four shapes must form a convincing northeast-to-southwest chain. Place Hokkaido first, then draw the long arc of Honshu, the smaller Shikoku below it, and Kyushu at the southwest end. Ignore the thousands of smaller islands. If the chain becomes horizontal or the gaps grow too large, the silhouette stops reading as Japan even when the individual strokes look plausible.

    Find the bird-like main gesture

    Papua New Guinea

    Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of New Guinea and combines a long mountainous body with a hooked eastern peninsula. Draw the main island section as a wide horizontal mass, then extend a narrow tail toward the southeast. The international border with Indonesia is much straighter than the coast, so use it as an anchor. Leave the Bismarck Archipelago and smaller islands until the mainland proportion feels stable; they add complexity but not the primary recognition cue.

    Draw the direction, not every fjord

    Norway

    Norway's coast is a trap for anyone who treats detail as accuracy. The country runs in a long southwest-to-northeast arc, with a narrow northern extension and a deeply cut Atlantic edge. Establish that long directional sweep first, then use only a few broad notches to suggest the fjords. Omit offshore islands and keep the inland border quieter. A dozen tiny zigzags cannot rescue a drawing whose overall axis, taper, or northern reach is wrong.

    Reduce an archipelago to three groups

    Philippines

    More than 7,000 islands make a literal drawing impossible at game scale. Reduce the Philippines to three zones: Luzon in the north, a compact Visayas cluster in the middle, and the larger Mindanao shape in the south. Keep the whole group on a roughly north-south axis and leave visible water between the zones. Palawan can be one narrow southwest stroke. This hierarchy preserves the country's structure without turning the map into random confetti.

    Lock the peninsula beneath a wide cap

    India

    India appears in both our lists because its triangular core is easy to recall, but its complete border carries 136 vertices — easy to sketch, hard to get accurate. Begin with a broad northern band, then taper both coasts into the southern peninsula. The western coast should feel firmer and the eastern coast rounder. Only after that mass works should you add the northeast extension connected by the narrow Siliguri Corridor. Drawing that extension too early often forces the peninsula to become too small, too vertical, or too symmetrical.

    Use five islands as the whole sentence

    Indonesia

    Indonesia's border outline spans thousands of kilometres and more than 17,000 islands, so memorizing every component is the wrong objective. Trace Sumatra as a northwest-to-southeast sliver, Java as a low horizontal stroke, the Indonesian part of Borneo as a broad central mass, Sulawesi as a branching shape, and western New Guinea at the east. Preserve the gaps and the west-to-east rhythm. Smaller islands can be omitted without losing the archipelago's overall identity.

    Think continent-scale envelope

    Russia

    Russia is difficult because its outline stretches across northern Eurasia and gives you few simple proportions to hold in one glance. Start with a long shallow envelope rather than the coast. Mark the more compact European west, extend the broad northern line across Siberia, then taper into the Pacific edge. Treat the Arctic islands and small northern bays as optional. The important facts are the enormous east-west span, the lower southern boundary, and the far-eastern descent.

    Simplify the continental mass first

    Canada

    Canada's border outline has 791 coordinate vertices in the current map source, the highest count among these ten candidates. Its continental body is already broad and irregular, while Hudson Bay removes a huge internal bite and the Arctic Archipelago multiplies the number of separate shapes. Trace the southern boundary and the mainland envelope first, carve a simplified Hudson Bay from the north, and stop there. Add only one or two northern island masses after the mainland remains recognizable on its own.

How to practice difficult country borders and outlines

Practice in layers. First draw only the height-to-width ratio and main direction. On the second attempt, add one large negative space such as Hudson Bay or one major extension such as India's northeast. On the third, add the largest islands or coastal turns. Compare each result immediately, but choose only one correction for the next round. Trying to repair every error at once usually replaces a useful mental model with a short-lived visual copy.

Vertex count can tell you where the source map stores detail; it cannot tell you which detail matters for recognition. Your final simplified outline should contain fewer points than the real border. Preserve the axis, proportion, and two or three landmarks that make the country distinct, then let the reveal show where additional detail would actually improve the score.

Read the score in two stages. Shape contributes 40% of Accuracy, so use it first to correct a country that is too wide, tilted the wrong way, or missing a large cut such as Hudson Bay. Border contributes 60%, so refine long edges and major turns only after the silhouette works. The scorer normalizes drawing size and map position but preserves proportion and orientation; drawing Canada larger will not repair a compressed mainland, and adding more islands will not repair the wrong east–west span.
